GM-151. German Shadow Box "Gefallen fur Sein Vaterland" $164.95
GM-151. German Shadow Box
"He Fell for His Fatherland." Original artifacts relating to the service and death of Franz Xaver Langmantl, a 36 year old lance corporal in a Grenadier Regiment who was killed in action near Senjutino, Tunisia on 12 March, 1943. He was one of 3.5 million such German soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Second World War. His death notice* proclaims that he was a loved brother and son, a decorated veteran of Holland, Belgium, France, and Russia. He had been a master carpenter in civilian life. His awards included the 2nd Class War Merit Cross with Swords, Russian Front Medal, and the Black Wound Badge. Originals of these appear herein. His Black Wound Badge (awarded for one to two wounds) would have been posthumously upgraded to gold in honor of his fatal wound. * The original death notice is included on the back of the display.
